Prince Edward Island is the smallest water heater market in Canada, and that changes how marketing works. Most customers are one or two conversations away from someone who has used you. A complete map listing, a steady stream of honest reviews and fast answers carry more weight here than any ad campaign. Paid search still has a role, but a supporting one.
We're a marketing service, not a contractor. We help PEI installers stay visible and trusted; we never do the work.
PEI's markets and buyers
- Charlottetown and Stratford: the core market, where most searches and most competition sit.
- Summerside: the second centre, with its own customer base.
- Cornwall and Three Rivers: smaller communities that often choose by reputation.
- Rural areas: reached by reliable scheduling and honest arrival windows more than by advertising.
Many customers will call the company their neighbour used. Your marketing job is to make sure that, when they look you up first, what they find confirms the recommendation.
Climate and seasonality
Winters on the Island are cold and snowy, though the surrounding Gulf of St. Lawrence takes some of the edge off. Urgent water heater calls rise in winter. Because the market is small, budget swings should be modest: keep a steady presence year-round and lift it slightly for cold spells.
Fuel mix and the right pitch
Statistics Canada reports that in 2023, about 28% of PEI households used oil for primary heating, 18% electricity and 8% wood, and heat pumps were the main system in about 36% of homes.
That mix means your site should cover electric tanks clearly, address homeowners in oil-heated homes (with your installers deciding what suits each home), and explain heat pump water heaters for a population that already trusts heat pumps.
Programs: mostly closed for now
As of October 2026, the main efficiencyPEI incentives weren't open:
- The residential heat pump equipment rebates ended on April 15, 2026, though eligible purchases made in the prior year may still be claimed within a year of purchase.
- The efficiencyPEI Free Heat Pump Program states applications are closed.
- A free insulation program was expanded under a federal agreement in June 2026, but it isn't a water heater measure.
So we'd keep rebates out of PEI water heater advertising entirely unless a new program opens.
Regulators and licences to know
We link these for reference; we don't give compliance advice.
- Inspection Services covers plumbing, electrical, propane and boilers.
- Plumbing companies need a Plumbing Contractor's Licence.
- People servicing propane appliances need an LP Gas Personnel Licence.
- The Workers Compensation Board of PEI handles workers' compensation.
A worked example for a Charlottetown installer
Illustrative numbers only. On a small island, review count and recency matter a lot. Suppose a Charlottetown company has 30 Google reviews, the newest from last spring, and a competitor has 25 from the past two months. Homeowners scanning the map may favour the recent ones. If the company asks every customer for a review and completes 12 installs a month with half leaving one, it adds about six fresh reviews a month, enough to look clearly active within a season.
Word of mouth, made visible
Referrals still drive much of PEI's water heater work. Marketing can't replace them, but it can support them: a clear website the neighbour can text to a friend, a map listing with recent photos, and a short follow-up message after each install that makes it easy to pass your number along.
How we'd market a PEI water heater company
- Make the map listing flawless: hours, service area, real photos, weekly posts.
- Ask every customer for a review within a day of the install.
- Run a small, steady search campaign around Charlottetown and Summerside on urgent phrases.
- Publish electric, oil-home and heat pump water heater pages, reviewed by your installers.
- Show the licences you hold on your website.
See local search and call-first websites, the rental-to-ownership service, or return to all areas.
Frequently asked questions
Are efficiencyPEI rebates still available to mention?
The residential heat pump equipment rebates ended on April 15, 2026, and the Free Heat Pump Program page says applications are closed, as of our October 2026 check. Don't advertise them; customers can check efficiencyPEI for anything new.
Is paid advertising worth it on PEI?
In modest amounts, yes, especially around Charlottetown. But on an island this size, your map listing, reviews and word of mouth usually do more of the work than ads.
What licences should we show on our website?
PEI requires a Plumbing Contractor's Licence for plumbing companies and an LP Gas Personnel Licence for people servicing propane appliances. Showing what you hold helps homeowners trust you; check requirements with the province.
