Where we work

Marketing water heater companies in British Columbia

BC water heater marketing has to handle two climates, a near-even split of gas and electric homes, and one of the few provincial programs in Canada that names heat pump water heaters.

Written by Ali Sedighi, MBALast updated:

British Columbia is really two water heater markets. On the coast, mild, wet winters mean failures are spread through the year and competition is dense. In the Interior and the North, longer, colder heating seasons concentrate demand and put more pressure on same-day service. Across both, homes divide fairly evenly between gas and electricity, and the province offers one of Canada's few programs that names heat pump water heaters.

We're a marketing service based in Vancouver, not a contractor. We help BC installers win calls; your licensed team does the work.

The BC market and its buyers

BC demand clusters in Metro Vancouver (Vancouver, Surrey, Burnaby, Richmond and Coquitlam), the Fraser Valley around Abbotsford, Kelowna in the Okanagan, and Greater Victoria including Saanich.

  • Metro Vancouver: housing ranges from condos to older detached homes, so pages should cover more than one kind of install. Clicks on urgent phrases are costly, so targeting by municipality and drive time matters.
  • Fraser Valley: larger detached homes and acreages, where gas tanks and tankless upgrades both sell, and buyers often compare two or three local names.
  • Okanagan and Interior: colder winters, longer drives and seasonal population swings. A strong map listing and honest arrival times win.
  • Vancouver Island: a mix of older homes and newer builds, with island logistics affecting stock and scheduling.

Climate and seasonality

The coast's mild, wet winters keep water heater replacements fairly steady year-round, with a lift in the colder months. The Interior and North have much colder, longer heating seasons, so failures and urgent calls bunch up in winter.

For marketing, that means coastal campaigns can run on a steadier budget, while Interior campaigns should scale up for cold spells and lean on upgrade content in milder months.

Fuel mix and what it means for your pitch

According to Statistics Canada, in 2023 about 42% of BC households used natural gas as their main heating energy and about 36% used electricity. That near-even split means your website should speak to both: gas tanks, condensing tanks and gas tankless for gas homes; electric tanks and heat pump water heaters for electric homes. A single generic page serves neither group well.

Programs relevant to water heaters

As of October 2026, two CleanBC Better Homes programs are worth knowing. Confirm current details with the administrator before quoting either to a customer.

  • Energy Savings Program: income-qualified rebates that include heat pump water heaters, alongside heat pumps and envelope work. For invoices dated on or after July 6, 2026, new requirements apply and some rebates were removed.
  • Home Renovation Rebate Program: rebates for households that aren't income-qualified. Current rebate amounts weren't confirmed when we checked, so we wouldn't advertise figures from it without checking first.

A good BC heat pump water heater page explains who may qualify, links the program, and tells readers to check eligibility before buying.

Regulators to know

These are the bodies BC homeowners and installers deal with. We link them for reference only.

  • Technical Safety BC licenses gas and electrical contractors and oversees gas safety. Some local governments issue certain permits, but contractor licensing stays with Technical Safety BC.
  • SkilledTradesBC runs Skilled Trades Certification, which covers trades such as gasfitter A and B.
  • WorkSafeBC handles workers' compensation.
  • Consumer Protection BC covers consumer matters.

On your website, showing your licence status where required builds trust with homeowners who check.

How we'd market a BC water heater company

  1. Split campaigns by region and fuel, so a Surrey gas-tank search and a Victoria heat pump water heater search get different pages.
  2. Own a few municipalities first, with strong map presence and honest arrival windows, before spreading across the Lower Mainland.
  3. Build a heat pump water heater page tied to the Energy Savings Program, with a dated link.
  4. Plan Interior budgets around cold snaps, with upgrade content carrying the shoulder seasons.
  5. Track everything to booked installs.

Our results include BC work: BCWide.ca tripled leads in 90 days. See same-day replacement leads, tankless and upgrade marketing, or go back to all areas.

Frequently asked questions

Can BC installers advertise heat pump water heater rebates?

Where a customer may qualify, yes, with care. As of October 2026 the CleanBC Better Homes Energy Savings Program includes heat pump water heaters for income-qualified households, and its rules changed for invoices from July 6, 2026. Link the program and tell readers to confirm eligibility.

Is Vancouver too competitive for a small installer?

It's expensive for broad phrases, but tight targeting by neighbourhood and drive time, plus a strong map listing, lets smaller companies compete. Many win by owning a few municipalities rather than the whole region.

Who licenses gas work in BC?

Technical Safety BC licenses gas and electrical contractors. We link the regulator so you know who oversees the work; we don't advise on licensing.
